Admission Requirements:
New Freshman Standard Admission Requirements (Fall 2004)


Category I
Students meeting the following requirements will be admitted to the University if they have successfully completed 17 college preparatory units to include:

  • 4 Units of English
  • 3 Units of Mathematics (Algebra or Higher
  • 3 Units of Social Science
  • 3 Units of Natural Science (two must include lab experiences)
  • 4 units of include courses form above academic areas, foreign languages, fine arts, computer science, or courses in vocational areas
  • Top 50% of graduating class OR ACT composite score of 22 (SAT I of 1030)
Students seeking immediate admission to general engineering must have a mathematics ACT score of 22 or SAT I of 515 (Mathematics) or higher. Engineering students not meeting these minimum mathematics requirements will be place in pre-engineering until completion of Calculus and Analytic Geometry with a letter grade of "C" or higher.


UW-Platteville uses standardized test results as one of the criteria measures for admission. The UW System requires all new freshman applicants to submit the results of either the ACT or SATI for review. The ACT is the preferred test. Students will not be disadvantaged in the admissions process by taking one test rather than the other. It is recommended that the ACT/SAT I be taken in the spring of the junior year and have the score reports sent directly to the office of Admission and Enrollment Management. This requirement is waived for prospective students over the age of 25.


Category II (Discretionary and Exceptional) Discretionary
Students in this category will be considered for admission, and are encouraged to apply if they

  • Have met the college preparatory course distribution requirements identified above, and are in the:
  • Top 65% AND have an
  • ACT composite score of 18 (SAT 870) or higher.
  • Believe there is compelling evidence supporting admission to the university.
  • Letters of support from teachers may be requested for students in this category
The University also has admission requirement for Exceptional and Home Schooled Students.


Graduate Admissions
Criminal Justice
Those seeking admission to the UW-Platteville School of Graduate Studies must have earned a bachelor's degree from a nationally or regionally accredited institution recognized by the Council for Higher Education Accreditation (CHEA). To be eligible for admission in full standing, a student must have an overall undergraduate grade point average of 2.75 or above, or 2.90 on the last 60 credits from the degree-granting institution.


To be considered for admission to the Master of Science in Criminal Justice program, students must have a bachelor's degree in criminal justice, criminology, or a related field from an accredited four-year college or university. If the degree is in an unrelated field, a minimum of three years of occupational experience in the field of criminal justice is required.


Engineering
Those seeking admission to the Master of Engineering program must have earned a bachelor's degree from a nationally or regionally accredited institution recognized by the Council for Higher Education Accreditation (CHEA) or have a bachelor's degree in a field related to engineering. If your bachelor's degree is in a field other than engineering, please also include two letters of support. International degrees will be evaluated on an individual basis.


To be eligible for admission in full standing, a student must have an overall undergraduate grade point average of 2.75 or above, or 2.90 on the last 60 credits from the degree-granting institution. Students who do not qualify for admission in full standing may be admitted on a trial enrollment justified by the admitting department and approved by the Dean of the School of Graduate Studies.


Project Management
Those seeking admission to the Master of Science in Project Management program must have earned a bachelor's degree from a nationally or regionally accredited institution recognized by the Council for Higher Education Accreditation (CHEA). International degrees will be evaluated on an individual basis.


To be eligible for admission in full standing, a student must have an overall undergraduate grade point average of 2.75 or above, or 2.90 on the last 60 credits from the degree-granting institution.


You have the choice of applying as a Matriculated Student or enrolling as a Special Student. If you have questions, you may contact the Distance Learning Center to discuss the following two choices:


Matriculated Students: Students seeking admission as a Matriculated student must: complete an electronic application request that official* transcripts be mailed directly from the Registrar's office at the institution(s) attended to the Distance Learning Center, B12 Karrmann, Platteville, WI 53818-3099. Unofficial transcripts received directly from a student are not acceptable.


Students may be contacted on an individual basis for additional information to support their admission.


Students who do not qualify for admission in full standing may be admitted on a trial enrollment, justified by the admitting department and approved by the dean of the School of Graduate Studies.


After you have been admitted to the program, an advisor will contact you. Once you have consulted with your advisor, you may register for courses through the registration form.
Students are allowed seven years from the formal date of admission into the graduate program to complete degree requirements; extensions may be granted for extenuating circumstances.


Special Students
Students who have earned a bachelor's degree from a nationally or regionally accredited institution recognized by the Council for Higher Education Accreditation (CHEA) may register as Special Students. Special students receive full academic credit for credit courses taken while they are on Special Student status. The Special Student may later be considered for admission into a degree program if a 3.00 grade point average has been maintained in all graduate-level work and all other admission requirements are met. With the program area's approval, a Special Student may transfer up to 12 credits earned at the University of Wisconsin-Platteville into a degree program. All graduate-level work will be included in computing the student's academic average.

Learning Environment:

  • Students are not required to visit campus to complete their studies.
  • Registration is easily done online on our web site.
  • Our online courses are highly interactive.
  • Students are encouraged to communicate with their instructor and classmates.
  • Students participate in online discussions and in both individual and group projects.
  • Faculty are present to facilitate and guide discussions and answer questions.
  • All online courses are semester based.
  • All online courses are offered asynchronously, which means that students are not required to be online at a specific time.
  • Students can use dial-up internet connections. A high bandwidth connection is not required.
  • Students who pay their tuition by the priority registration deadline can access the class one week prior to the actual class start date.
Priority deadline tuition payers have an opportunity to review course content before the course begins.
  • Priority deadline tuition payers can participate in the online course software orientation prior to the beginning of class.
